Music

If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.
— Albert Einstein

Listening to and performing music has brought me joy and balance for as long as I can remember. So far I've studied cello, voice, composition/arranging, and conducting while performing with a number of Bay Area and Los Angeles area ensembles.

Choral

At USC, I sang tenor in the Thornton Chamber Singers under the direction of Jo-Michael Scheibe, an internationally recognized choir and winners of the American Prize in 2015. In two years, we performed at two ACDA conventions, the China International Choral Festival, and the World Choral Symposium, among many other performances such as backing up Barry Manilow.

At Berkeley, I sang in the Chamber Chorus and University Chorus under the directions of Marika Kuzma and Matthew Oltman. I've also been in performances conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, James Conlon, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, and two productions with the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles.

I recently joined the San Francisco Fog City Singers, 9th place finishers at the 2017 International Barbershop Harmony Society Chorus Competition, one of the best finishes for a new choir in the society's history.

Instrumental

As an instrumentalist, I played cello with the UC Berkeley Chamber Orchestra, the Berkeley Community Choral Organization, and briefly for the Orange County Mormon Choral Organization. I also studied Javanese Gamelan at Berkeley with Midiyanto.

composition

Composing often feels like an exercise in futility, though I carry on. I arranged Debussy's Clair de Lune on text by Paul Verlaine (sight read by the USC Chamber Singers heresheet music available). I've also arranged a couple of pop numbers, including Katy Perry's Firework (rough video here). I also wrote and recorded a mildly embarrassing song about Einstein's theory of relativity, available upon special request.

Volunteering

At Berkeley, I volunteered with and was president of a large music tutoring club serving the Berkeley Unified School District, The Music Connection. I tutored elementary through high school students extensively in instrumental (cello and violin) and choral music, including helping out as the Assistant Conductor for the Berkeley High School Chorus in 2012-2013. The Music Connection won the 2012 Chancellor's Award for Public Service.
